The Player Characters (PCs) usually represent the heroic Biosphere Guardians of the setting - individuals who are part of the Biosphere Project team, and have a job/role within the Biosphere.

Each PC will have a Career and Expertise, and a ranking in each of the 10 Skills in the game, each counterpointed within the Skills Matrix.

To Create a Character you can use the following steps filling in the Character PlayBook Template here. We suggest this order, but feel free to do it in any order you like. Equally, if you want to choose number instead of rolling a D6, your have our explicit permission!

Defining the Skill Matrix
Each horizontal pair of Skills in the matrix always totals 6 points - with a minimum 1 and a maximum 5 on either side.

Follow these steps:

* Roll 1D6. Choose one horizontal Skill pair. Enter the value rolled as the score for either the left or the right Skill.

* Add the remaining points up to the total of 6 to the other Skill. e.g. Alex rolls a 2. They choose the Skill pair “Influence - Handiwork” and place the 2 rolled in Influence skill and 4 in the opposite skill Handiwork.
* Repeat this process until you have scores for all Skills.

If you ever roll a 6, you may choose how you wish to split the 6 point total for any undefined Skill pair.

Skills are deliberately horizontally paired to make hard decisions a part of creating a well-rounded character. However, we are not saying these concepts are fundamentally, thematically opposed, only that a character makes a trade-off whenever they specialise in a skill.

Here's a list of the skills, and example ways that you can use or define them. <code>Italitics</code> are to suggested ways to use them in combat.
Choose a Career and Expertise:
Every Biosphere Guardians has a role within the project and we use the term Career to define broad categories of responsibility. Every Career has a list of possible Expertise that can define a characters specific set of aptitudes and interests, but you can also create your own if these don't fit your idea for a character.

Each Career comes with a set of Abilities the character can unlock as they advance in the game.

When a Player Character is rolling a skill check where they can leverage their Expertise keyword, they may roll that check with Advantage :-)

Favoured Skills
The first Career Ability that every characters gets is to choose one skill as Favoured meaning you fill in the little diamond next to the skill <big>♢</big>

This skill is now has a -1 to every roll you make - even when rolling with advantage or disadvantage. This can make a bad or middling score much more usable.

However, a roll of 6 are always Critical Failures regardless, and a roll can never be modified to lower than 1.

Look here for more information on Careers and Expertise, including Career Abilities.

Choose Equipment and Protection
* Create or Choose a Protection - this keyword will help you ignore at least 1 condition if you can justifiably apply it. See Protection for a list of suggestions.
* Create or Choose a item of Equipment : Guardians are often well equipped, and you can usually find what you need if your at a Biosphere Base, but create or choose a weapon or a special piece of equipment, vehicle, or even just a personal item, that your character always has with them.

Finishing Touches
* Briefly describe your character and their background. Some prompting questions:
** How old are they? Do they remember life before the Biosphere?
** How did they get involved in the Biosphere Project?
** What do they care most about in their lives right now?
** What do they look like: imagine their silhouette - what's their clothing/apparel, hair and expression?

* Have a go at drawing your Character Portrait, or ask an artistic friend to do it for you (buy them dinner or something)
* Finally, create a Name for your character; ideally appropriate to the setting, themes and genre of your game.

Welcome to Biosphere Guardians 2050
Biosphere Guardians 2050 is an exciting tabletop roleplaying game design exchange project for young people themed around biodiversity and climate action.

Participants based in Kempten (Germany), Trento (Italy), Sligo (Ireland) and from across Wales (UK) will work together to create a vision of the near future where humanity has begun acting as a responsible element in the world. <blockquote>In the near future, vast nature reserves have been set up across the world to counteract the climate crisis and let nature return. The Biosphere Guardians are the scientists, rangers and ambassadors protecting and managing these new 'lungs of the Earth'
Despite this global positive turn, things do not always go to plan, surprising new dangers can emerge, and for some people the temptations of old, destructive habits are hard to leave behind... </blockquote>The project is open to young people from Kempten, Trento, Sligo and Wales aged 16-25 and is free of charge. It will run from Autumn 2022 to Autumn 2024. There will be regular local meetings and online meetings, special events, as well as a number of trips, giving participants opportunities to play and socialise with peers from across Europe, discuss important issues with experts from many fields and engage actively and creatively in game design.

Creating a Character
Define Ability Scores.
Each horizontal pair of Abilities always totals 6 points (minimum 1, maximum 5 on either side).

Roll 1D6. Choose one horizontal Ability pair. Enter the value rolled as the score for either the left or the right Ability.

Add the remaining points up to the total of 6 to the other Ability. E.g. I roll a 2. I choose the Ability pair “Influence - Senses”. I place the 2 rolled in Influence and 4 in the opposite ability Senses.

Repeat this process until you have scores for all Abilities.

If you ever roll a 6, you may choose how you wish to split the 6 point total for any undefined Ability pair.

Abilities are horizontally paired to make hard decisions a part of creating a well-rounded character.

Choose a relevant Specialism.
While Biosphere Guardians all have rounded skill sets, they also have a Specialism which might be a natural aptitude or a keen interest linked with their Guardian responsibilities. When doing something closely related to their Specialism, a character gains Advantage on their roll. There are (currently!) six Specialisms:

1. Security

2. Engineer

3. Pilot

4. Animal Specialist

5. Researcher

6. Scientist

Briefly describe your character and their background.
Define the character's specialism - what kind of engineer or pilot are they? What category of animals are they an expert in?

Starting Health and Items
All character begin with 8 Hits and 1 item / asset.

Choose a item it would be reasonable for your character to have; a weapon or a special piece of equipment or vehicle. Alternatively, give your character 1 point of armour.

Rules Summary
Ability Check
Roll equal or under an Ability score on 1D6 to succeed in any given action or activity.

1 = critical success. 6 = critical failure.

With Advantage roll 2D6 and keep the lowest number. Specialisms give PCs Advantage on relevant actions or activities. With Disadvantage roll 2D6 and keep the highest number.

Damage
Standard Success: 1 Hit + Weapon Score.

Critical Success: 1D6 + Weapon Score.

Most weapons carry a Weapon Score of 1. Heavy weapons carry a Weapon Score of 2.

Rapid fire weapons can be handled as follows: roll 2D6 with advantage per target or cartridge; if targets are in cover roll 1D6.

To react against an NPC or environmental event, PCs roll for a relevant Ability.

Against NPC attacks specifically, PCs roll Resistance or Speed (if applicable). Failures = Hit reduction (see table below).

Healing
When a PC reaches 0 Hits, they are incapacitated and will die in 1D6 rounds, unless they are revived by a successful PC Aid roll. A standard success restores 2 Hits, a critical success restores 1D6 Hits. Further healing can take place away from immediate danger, with appropriate medical attention and with time. A critical failure when aiding an incapacitated PC results in their immediate death.

Non Player Characters
NPCs vary depending on their type and importance. The following elements can be combined in any way, but are given here in their basic form, ranked by NPC Hits.
